Ford is ready to shake-up the electric car sector with a range of affordable new models including a compact dual-cab ute.

The blue oval revealed plans recently to release a series of new battery-powered vehicles, including a hatchback, sedan, ute and delivery van, that it promises will make EVs more affordable than ever thanks to the same principles that created the iconic Model T more than a century ago.

Ford has yet to reveal any concrete details about any of the vehicles but indicated the compact ute would be priced for less than US$30,000 (AUS$45,000) before tax credits.

The dual-cab is expected to sit below the company’s best-selling F-150 and the Ranger, as a replacement for the existing car-based Maverick that uses the same underpinnings as the Escape SUV and Focus hatchback.

Built to rival the Slate Auto’s back-to-basics electric ute, it’s been hotly tipped that the new Ford ute could revive the Ranchero nameplate, although the Blue Oval has not yet confirmed the badge for its latest EV.

Perhaps surprisingly, considering its price, Ford has confirmed its new zero-emission pick-up will be as quick as its current Mustang EcoBoost, suggesting a 0-100km/h dash of around 5.5 seconds.

Inside, Ford says the new EV will offer cabin space on par with mid-size SUVs, like the Toyota RAV4, and will feature a large frunk and lockable rear bed cover.

Based on a new dedicated EV platform, Ford released a graphic showing how the new affordable EV architecture will go on to underpin a hatch, sedan, wagon, SUV and a delivery van.

Helping Ford save costs, the underpinnings are said to feature 20 per cent fewer parts and 25 per cent fewer fasteners that all see it require 40 per cent fewer workstations, slashing the build time by 15 per cent.

Ford says its new ute will be made in America at its Louisville factory in Kentucky.
