MG has lowered the barrier to entry into its burgeoning electric vehicle line-up following confirmation of local details for its new MG4 Urban.

Designed to sit below the existing, rear-wheel drive MG4 hatch – and effectively replaces the base-level variant with a 51kWh battery pack - the front-drive Urban will become the Chinese brand’s most affordable EV when it arrives in showrooms this month priced from $31,990 drive away.

It’s sharp pricing also puts the brand in closer to its rivals in the increasingly competitive budget EV segment, which is currently headed by the BYD Atto 1 (from $23,990 plus ORCs), but also includes the BYD Dolphin (from $29,990 plus ORCs) and the GAC Aion UT (from $31,990 plus ORCs).

The MG4 EV Urban sits on a different platform to the current MG4 and introduces an innovative 6-in-1 electric drive system that combines multiple components in a single compact unit to reduce weight and increase cabin space.

Consumers will have the choice of a 43kWh ‘standard range’ battery or a 54kWh ‘long range’ unit, each capable of 150kW DC fast charging from 10-80 per cent in around 30 minutes and delivering respective driving range estimates of 316km and 405km.

Both share the same level of standard equipment in the Essence trim, which includes synthetic leather interior trim, heated front seats, climate control, keyless entry, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity, DAB+ digital radio, sat nav, wireless smartphone mirroring and a wireless charging pad.
