Hyundai Australia has confirmed details for its newest dedicated electric vehicle, the Elexio mid-sized SUV.
Set to be offered in two model grades, an eponymous entry-level version and the flagship Elite, the Chinese-built soft roader is positioned between the smaller KONA electric and the retro-futuristic IONIQ 5 as a direct rival to the likes of the top-selling Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7.
The higher-grade Elite is in Australian showrooms now and priced from $61,990 plus on-roads, while the entry-level version will arrive before the middle of year and cost $58,990 plus on-roads.
Both use the same powertrain, with a single electric motor that produces 160kW and 310Nm driving the front wheels and an 88kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery supplied by rival BYD that can deliver up to 562km of driving range in the base model and 546km in the Elite.
Standard features across both models includes LED headlights and taillights, power adjustable front seats, head-up display, a 27-inch ultra-widescreen display, push-button start, wireless phone charger, Bluetooth connectivity, embedded sat nav and smartphone mirroring.
The entry-level Elexio rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and has cloth interior trim while the Elite has larger 20-inch alloys and leather trim, as well as heated and ventilated front seats, a power-operated tailgate, an additional wireless phone charger and more.
Measuring up at 4615mm long and 1875mm wide on a 2750mm wheelbase, the Elexio slots between the Kona Electric and IONIQ 5 SUV in Hyundai’s line-up and is based on the Hyundai Group’s E-GMP 400V architecture.
Its 88kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in a claimed 38 minutes, while a 160kW/310Nm electric motor sends power to the front wheels.
Meanwhile, the Elexio will come with bespoke Australian suspension and steering tuning following local testing conducted Down Under last year.
The five-seat SUV offers a 506-litre boot, extending to 1540 litres with the rear seats folded and a full suite of active safety gear will come standard, including highway driving assist, driver attention warning, blind-spot collision avoidance assist, intelligent speed limit assist, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, a 360-degree camera, and more.
Five exterior colour options include Crystal White (standard), Medium Grey, Pebble Blue, Dragon Red, and Phantom Black, while interior upholstery colour choices extend to Obsidian Black or Dove Grey.
